Face Bots

This is another interesting project I dove into while taking my Animation Bootcamp course at the School of Motion. The task was to animate the faces of the two bots as we explored the graph editor in Adobe After Effects. The yellow bot has to move in a smooth easy eased way and the purple bot has to be “stiff” in his facial expressions. I decided to achieve those very different styles as I explored what a stylized sneeze and a laugh would look like. Further below I have laid out my thought process and some sketches of the key-poses I went through.

After a research I came up with the following poses for the bot sneeze. In practice I realized that if I have stylized face features I also have to have stylized animation poses otherwise it can't be clear what the character is doing.

I edited my poses and tried to stylize them as much as possible and at the same time preserve the characteristics of a sneeze.

According to the task the second robot had to be "stiff" as the main purpose of this projects was to practice working with the curves in the speed and value graph and learn to achieve smooth or more sharp effect of the animation. Based on my experience with the sneezing bot I decided to create a very simple laugh with only 2 poses with a transition in the beginning and the end as the laugh intensifies and stops at the end.
